Want to be a part of the community and support those who defend the defenceless? Are you a business wanting to expand your exposure while achieving Corporate and Social Responsibility objectives? Are you an animal welfare advocate wanting to make a difference?

The *WOD Dogs Project (*WOD is a CrossFit term meaning ‘Workout Of the Day’) needs your help!

Every morning, the RSPCA Qld Inspectorate prepare to attend animal cruelty complaints throughout the State. Before departing for those jobs, they already face some major challenges:

•  Being ‘1 up’ (each Inspector has a designated area of operation and do not have the security of a partner as do Police, yet they deal with the same ‘clientele’ and therefore same dangers);

•  Lack of government funding (less than 2% of the annual operating budget is provided by government and yet RSPCA Qld require >$30,000,000.00 p.a. to keep doors open) means they must make do with limited resources; and,
•  Magistrates are handing down such lenient penalties for animal cruelty offences, not only does it set a laughable precedence, RSPCA Qld only recoup a very small portion of costs (legal, treatment and boarding) and so are forever ‘behind the eight ball’!
Once on the road performing their daily duties, the Inspectorate are then confronted with some unforgettable and life changing situations – such as the story of INDY; a female dog seen to be tossed from a car, starved so badly she was skeletal, dehydrated and more than 60% under her normal body weight, now rehabilitated and in a loving home, or the story of DIESEL; a young male dog castrated by his owner with a rubber band, suffering incredible pain and infection with no relief and or treatment for 10 days before RSPCA seized and treated him, or the story of SNOWY; a cat that was taped and torched yet managed to make its way back home before being found smouldering by his owner. SNOWY underwent major surgery numerous times and wasn’t expected to make it, yet did thanks to RSPCA intervention. The culprits are only sometimes brought to justice and not all jobs have a happy ending…

I have supported RSPCA Qld annually with various fundraising activities… This year, I wanted to combine my three absolute passions to raise much needed funds:

1. Health and Fitness,
2. Dogs, and
3. Photography.
And, so WOD Dogs was born… A published photo-book consisting of high profile athletes and their dogs, to promote healthy lifestyles, healthy dog ownership, and to raise much needed funds for RSPCA Qld through sales of the photo-book and sponsorship.

My day absolutely kicked ar$e… I spent the morning shooting Dr. Sian Stevens (Vet at Brisbane Veterinary Specialist Centre – BVSC), a mad CrossFitter and Paleo advocate, and her little man – Arnie, as part of my WOD Dogs project! Our first location was at the Animal Hospital and I was privileged enough to go behind the scenes and watch the best vets in Brisbane care for the sick and injured. After playing Doctors and Nurses, we then split to have some breakfast at my favourite Brisbane cafe (and now Sian’s!) – Primal Pantry, where we both smashed the Sticky Pork dish and a Bullet Proof. Once refuelled it was off to get some more happy snaps at an amazing space – CrossFit Lift!

I will let the shots speak for themselves; however, I am pretty glad that this ‘doctor by day, athlete by night’ is on board! If you want to read more on Sian and Arnies’ story, you are going to have to buy the book; WOD Dogs! Watch this space!

No, it’s not a spelling mistake; I am now including Movies of the Day (MOD’s)…

This was a little trailer I put together after Hotshots 19 yesterday morning at CrossFit Mitchelton. This ‘Memorial/Hero’ WOD is dedicated to the Firefighters who lost their lives on 30 Jun 13 while fighting a fire in Yarnell, Arizona. The fire was ignited by a lightning strike and overran and killed 19 Firefighters with the Prescott Fire Department’s interagency Granite Mountain Hotshots. It took 10 days for the fire to be contained. Those that died were:

  • Jesse Steed, 36
  • Wade Parker, 22
  • Joe Thurston, 32
  • William Warneke, 25
  • John Percin, 24
  • Clayton Whitted, 28
  • Scott Norris, 28
  • Dustin Deford, 24
  • Sean Misner, 26
  • Garret Zuppiger, 27
  • Travis Carter, 31

Mum always told me you can tell a lot about someone by the way they dress… And, I am inclined to think that she was on the money! Don’t get me wrong; I am a bloke’s fashion-whore, and it seems so too are thousands of other CrossFitters. I absolutely love (no sarcasm intended) that every CrossFit Event is as colourful as Carnival – Brazil! And, this weekend was no exception at CrossFit Sunshine Coast‘s Throwdown (Caloundra). From personalised Nano’s, to neon head bands with matching socks, to old-school Vollies, there were some funky outfits (being worn by some serious athletes) getting down and dirty in the mud and rain! Here are just a few pics I snuck for Again Faster Media. For the remainder, be watching the Again Faster Facebook page and while you are at it, ‘like’ them to get other great updates on products/equipment/apparel, their sponsored athletes, and a broad range of health and fitness topics. A big thank you to Lori, Lee and the volunteers from CF SC for planning, hosting and managing such a magic event!

Sure, a polished, minimalist style gym is attractive to some, but nothing heightens your senses and amps your heart rate more than a raw, industrial box where you can throw sh!t, drop sh!t, yell sh!t, take your sh!t off, play loud sh!t, and sweat all over sh!t… #oldschool

I was privileged to be a part of the Again Faster team (Media) to cover CrossFit 189‘s first birthday open day… What a cracking team of coaches and athletes! That is what is so appealing and infectious about the CrossFit culture – The community. And CrossFit 189 foster it extremely well! Thanks for having me along guys!
